Touko Valio Laaksonen (Tom of Finland): Male Erotic Art At A crucial Moment

Image

Physique Pictorial was a beefcake magazine published by and containing photographs by Bob Mizer of the American Model Guild. Early beefcake magazines like this served as disguised gay pornography, outwardly appearing to be health and fitness magazines but were very different to the intended audience.

Touko Valio Laaksonen (1920–1991), better known as Tom of Finland, was a Finnish artist whose stylized, hyper-masculine homoerotic illustrations made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century gay visual culture. Born on 8 May 1920 in Kaarina, Finland, he adopted the pseudonym “Tom of Finland” after submitting his drawings to the American magazine Physique Pictorial in 1957. His work featured men — bikers, lumberjacks, soldiers, sailors, and policemen — drawn with exaggerated musculature and sexual confidence, challenging prevailing stereotypes of gay men as effeminate and ashamed. His art circulated widely through underground gay culture at a time when homosexuality was criminalized in many countries. Over his career he produced thousands of illustrations that helped shape gay self-image and liberation movements.

While it could be said that his images may have boomeranged the image of homosexuality to hyper-sexualized dominance and power, Laaksonen’s depictions of joyous, powerful masculinity gave many gay men role models of confidence and pride at a crucial moment in LGBTQ+ cultural history. His influence extended into fashion, music, and broader pop culture.

In 1984, Tom co-founded the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles with Durk Dehner to preserve his extensive catalogue and support erotic art, which continues to operate as a cultural and archival hub.

Laaksonen died on 7 November 1991 in Helsinki after a long battle with emphysema, but today his work is celebrated in museums and exhibitions worldwide, and he is often regarded as a cultural hero of gay art and visibility.

Tom of Finland’s importance to LGBTQ+ culture goes far beyond erotic art:

  • Positive Representation: His work offered bold depictions of gay male sexuality at a time when such imagery was taboo, helping many gay men imagine themselves as confident, desirable, and visible.
  • Aesthetic Influence: His fetish-inspired style informed gay subcultures (leather, biker aesthetics) and mainstream styles (influencing fashion designers and pop culture icons).
  • Cultural Liberation: His illustrations helped normalize male same-sex desire and defied stereotypes of weakness or shame, contributing to the identity and politics of gay liberation movements from the 1960s onward.
  • Legacy Through Institutions: The Tom of Finland Foundation protects his work, promotes erotic art, supports emerging artists, and provides historical context for LGBTQ+ art within broader culture.
